Quick Answer
Yes — a valid doctor's prescription is required for every MRI scan in India. The prescription tells the radiology team which body part to scan, which protocol to use, whether contrast is needed, and the clinical indication. Walk-in MRI without a prescription is not standard practice. If you don't have one, Imaging World can guide you to a referring physician.
Why a prescription is mandatory
An MRI is a clinical investigation, not a wellness scan you can self-order. The prescription serves four critical purposes:
- Protocol selection — different clinical questions require different MRI sequences. "MRI knee for ACL tear" needs different sequences than "MRI knee for tumour".
- Contrast decision — gadolinium contrast carries kidney function and allergy considerations. Only a clinician can decide if contrast is needed.
- Safety screening — the prescription flags relevant history (implants, surgeries, pregnancy) that affect MRI safety.
- Insurance & reimbursement — almost all insurers require a prescription with clinical indication to approve MRI claims.
Who can write an MRI prescription?
Any registered medical practitioner (MBBS or higher with a valid medical council registration) can prescribe an MRI. This includes general physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, gynaecologists, oncologists, and emergency-room doctors. The prescription should specify:
- Patient name, age and sex
- Body part to scan (e.g., MRI Lumbar Spine)
- Clinical indication (e.g., low back pain with radiculopathy)
- Whether contrast is needed (with or without gadolinium)
- Date of prescription and doctor's signature with registration number
I don't have a prescription — what now?
If you're convinced you need an MRI but don't have a referring doctor, contact Imaging World. The team can guide you to a panel physician who can review your symptoms and, if clinically appropriate, write the prescription. This is much safer than getting a scan without clinical context — an MRI without indication is often inconclusive or misleading.
Is a digital or WhatsApp prescription accepted?
Yes. A clear photograph or scanned PDF of a valid prescription is accepted, provided the doctor's name, registration number, signature and stamp are legible. Imaging World will verify and confirm before scheduling the scan.
What about other scans — CT, ultrasound, X-ray?
The same prescription requirement applies to CT scans and X-rays. Obstetric ultrasound (pregnancy sonography) additionally requires Form-F under the PCPNDT Act, which is filled at the centre. Most non-pregnancy ultrasounds and X-rays also need a prescription, though some screening tests in routine health checkups don't.
